CSE101 lecture materials
Week 02
29 Sep–2 Oct 2026 · Computer architecture
Tuesday 29 Sep · CSE101
13:30–16:30 · Z23
Principles
CPU, registers and memory; stored programs and the instruction cycle; I/O, buses, DMA and communication.
Application & programming
Decode and trace VizMachine instructions; distinguish values from addresses; examine branches, byte copying and bit masks.
Weekly PPTX, code and recordings: in preparation.
Learning focus
Trace a short instruction sequence and distinguish register values, addresses and memory contents. Recognize the roles of CPU, memory and I/O; Lab 1 remains terminal and number practice.
D: do independently · M: explain and modify a worked example · R: recognize, trace and compare.
Revisit: Gate output and positional binary.
Wednesday 30 Sep · Recitation
More signed-number examples and a short trace; terminal setup help.
Start time tentatively 16:30; room to be announced.
Friday 2 Oct · CSE107
Lab 01: Terminal & number representation
Navigate files and directories in the terminal and practice interpreting small bit patterns.
Attend your assigned two-hour group. Handout in preparation.
