Lecture materials
In this lecture
CPU, registers and memory; stored programs; instruction encoding and execution; conditional branches; byte copying and bit masks; controllers and I/O; shared buses, caches and DMA; handshaking, buffering, timing, Manchester coding, communication rates and parallel processing.
The 63-page architecture slide set is accompanied by an illustrated reading with worked examples and expandable answers. The instructor determines classroom pace and carryover.
Run the examples
Open the course VizMachine ↗. Predict the state, step through each instruction and compare. The reading supplies starting addresses, input values and expected results.
Practice and coordination
Recitation: More signed-number examples and a short trace; terminal setup help.
