Distributed operating-system principles
Lecture set 09 · Semester week 10
The central question
What changes when cooperating processes run on different machines?
First half
Messages and RPC, latency, timeouts and partial failure.
Second half
Ordering and coordination; replication and consistency fundamentals; a distributed-storage example and paper-analysis preparation.
What you should be able to do
- Explain why a timeout does not establish that a remote operation failed.
- Discuss basic coordination, replication and consistency trade-offs.
A concrete example
Consider two machines, a delayed reply and a retry: distinguish failure from an operation that has not yet answered.
