Syllabus
Course purpose, learning expectations, and the provisional Fall 2026 plan.
Course information
Introduction To Computer Science Laboratory
CSE 107 · 2 ECTS
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Göktürk · Fall 2026
Friday: one assigned two-hour section, 08:30–10:30 or 10:30–12:30. Two rooms run in parallel per slot; room/group allocations to be announced.
Course purpose
Practice the concepts introduced in CSE101 through short, observable tasks. Prepare, run experiments or programs, test their behavior, and explain what you learned. Tasks build on taught prerequisites and supplied examples.
Learning outcomes
- Use the development environment and follow a short machine-program trace.
- Implement small C calculations, conditions, loops, functions and one-dimensional array tasks.
- Explain and adapt supplied examples using multidimensional arrays, pointers, records, files and Arduino I/O.
- Test a result, reproduce a defect and explain a small correction or modification.
- Record relevant evidence and explain your own work concisely.
How deeply will we study each topic?
Understanding grows through repeated use. Not every topic requires an implementation from scratch.
- Do independently: small number/logic exercises, machine traces, core C expressions, conditions, loops, functions, one-dimensional arrays and simple debugging.
- Explain and modify: supplied examples of multidimensional arrays, pointers/strings, structs, files, Arduino behavior and a small singly linked list.
- Recognize, trace and compare: unions, doubly linked lists, trees, graphs, binary-search advantages and broader computer-engineering concepts.
Each activity will state its expected depth. Rows, columns and nested loops are introduced without assuming prior matrix knowledge.
Weekly PowerPoint decks and practice
CSE101 lecture decks are the primary teaching resource, published as PDF slides with companion HTML readings. They will include explanations, diagrams, worked examples, short exercises, recaps, and reading/video links. Published PDF slides and companion HTML readings support independent restudy.
Essential explanations and completed worked examples will be included in the deck so students can download and study it independently. The lecture page links to each available slide PDF and reading.
Recitation and lab handouts remain separate. Brief revisits to earlier topics are built into existing practice sessions rather than added as large extra assignments.
Lab sequence and preparation
Week 1 is orientation. Weeks 2–13 contain twelve regular labs, followed by selective makeup in Week 14. The draft progresses through the terminal, assembly, C types/control flow, Arduino, arrays, pointers, records, linked lists, debugging and integration.
- Prelabs are released Friday night for the following week.
- Submit preparation on Thursday before the lab, by the time stated in the brief.
- Attend your assigned Friday group and demonstrate the requested work.
- Submit the report in the following week by its announced deadline.
Holiday exceptions will be announced explicitly. Prelabs are graded lightly. Reports focus on the work, tests and explanation; final formats and marking criteria are being prepared.
Assessment
Prelab preparation, TA-assessed lab-session performance and following-week reports contribute to CSE107. There is no midterm or final examination. Component weights, detailed criteria and makeup eligibility will be announced.
Study resources and course policies
The weekly PPTX decks will be the core study material. An online textbook is being evaluated; no replacement textbook has been selected. Links will point to the exact readings when adopted.
AI is a theory topic in CSE101. For responsible use of AI tools in coursework, read the published CSE101 AI-use guidelines. Each assignment or lab brief will state its permitted assistance and collaboration rules.
Assessment weights, attendance requirements, late-work rules, exam dates and final submission details will be published once confirmed. Check the calendar for known holiday exceptions and the resources page for course-platform links.
